The Northern Illinois Transport Team (NITT) began on April 18, 2014. We are a group of all-volunteer drivers and administrators who move cats from high kill shelters to approved state registered rescues or their fosters using the pony express model (lining up drivers to meet and hand off).

Most of our transports are done from Chicago Animal Care and Control which is an open admission shelter, meaning they CANNOT turn away any animal surrendered to it. When they run out of room they have no choice but to begin putting animals to sleep (euthanasia).

Our mission is to provide transport to areas that were unavailable to rescuers in the past. As of the time of this writing (May 2019) NITT has completed over 1,450 transports, saving the lives of over 4,000 animals (mostly cats).

When we receive a transport request we post it to our Facebook page and tag drivers who are available that day and do all the needed coordination and processing of paperwork. We generally fill transport requests within 24 hours of receiving them.

Don't let where you live discourage you from joining. We are always looking for drivers and would like to expand beyond Northern Illinois so anyone in the Midwest is encouraged to join. Drivers and admins are all volunteers and we charge no fees, so we cannot reimburse drivers for time or gas. The only benefits are feeling good about saving lives and connecting with fellow rescuers.

Thanks for your time.
